Troubled Yiga charged with negligence, sent to Luzira

KAMPALA – The City Pastor Augustine Yiga of Revival Church Kampala who said that the Coronavirus in Uganda is a hoax has been charged with negligence and remanded to Luzira prison.

Pastor Yiga had on Monday, March 30 appeared before the Mwanga II Magistrate’s Court has when he denied the charges. He was then remanded to Luzira prison until April 6.

According to Section 171 of the Penal Code Act, any one person who involves themselves in a negligent act likely to spread an infectious disease commits a crime and faces a jail sentence of up to seven years.

“Any person who unlawfully or negligently does any act which is and which he or she knows or has reason to believe to be likely to spread the infection of any disease dangerous to life commits and offence and is liable to imprisonment for seven years,” the Penal Code Act.

In the clip that circulated on social media, Pastor Yiga while using his television station ABS TV even dared the government to arrest and imprison him, but vowed not to change his opinion about the non-existence of Coronavirus in not only Uganda but Africa at large.

This, however, prompted Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Diana Atwine to ask police to arrest and prosecute him.

Dr. Atwine also tasked the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to take action on the Pastor and his ABS TV station which aired his programme rubbishing reports of the existence of COVID-19 pandemic in Africa.

He was later on March 28 arrested over false utterances and passing harmful propaganda.

Uganda has so far register 33 cases of coronavirus and President Museveni has since revealed he may be forced to put drastic measure to fight it.
